HBO Real Sports
You ever watch Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel? It's on HBO. It is supposedly a hard hitting investigative sports show, and it's tag line is "nothing is out of bounds".
I'm guessing that would include only telling half of a story.
The episodes that are airing now include one entitled "Dog Fears", and is an expose on greyhound racing.
I know of several people who were interviewed by HBO for this show, but not one of them is shown on camera. The only reason I can imagine is that they were all people who volunteer in greyhound adoption, but don't protest greyhound racing.
Sure, the racing side was presented by National Greyhound Association president Gary Guccione, and Mary Butler (owner of Greymeadows Farm in Abilene,KS)... but when it came to people who don't make money from the greyhounds, the only on camera people were of the anti-racing persausion.
HBO shows hidden camera footage of greyhounds being brought into a vets office to be euthanized and then dumped out back, and says it knew where to go through an anonymous tip. Hmmmm, interesting that the people who gave the tip didn't think to call the NGA, who could have stepped in and possibly helped the greyhounds. No no, the NGA is evil and must be stopped... so lets get footage of these dead greyhounds. One thing about that segment: No one ever proves it was an NGA person bringing in those dogs. How do we as the viewer know it wasn't the animal rights person who phoned in the tip? Have a few dogs put down to get rid of the bigger evil known as racing. I wouldn't put that past the AR wackos. The AR folks have gone so far as to release greyhounds from transport trucks in highway rest areas... only to have the dogs run out into the highway and get killed. Well, at least they died "free". Fucking Wackos.
25 years ago, greyhound adoption was almost unheard of. Many (if not most) greyhounds were killed when their racing days were done (the number was over twenty thousand per year). Today, there are probably 3 to 6 thousand killed per year... and the NGA is working to get to a 100% adoption goal by 2007. The AR folks don't care, and continue to quote made up numbers of 17,000 killed.
Look, three thousand healthy greyhounds killed because they can't win races anymore is too many... but the NGA has made strides to turn things around. It didn't happen overnight, and it is continuing... but the AR folks (PETA, HSUS, G2K, and GPL) don't care. Homing retired racers isn't the issue for them, the issue for them is ending racing... AT ANY COST, even the lives of dogs.
