Yapping Yael

One of the editorial columnists at the Kansas City Star gets my goat with his regionalistic cheerleading. Yael T. Abouhalkah believes that Kansas City is (and should always be) the recipient of admiration (not to mention tax dollars) of anyone who lives with 50 miles of downtown. Of course 10 miles west puts you in another state... but that doesn't stop Yael from hoping.

In todays editorial column, Yael believes that because Overland Park is within that 50 miles, and because he used to live there as a kid, that he knows exactly what the residents of that city should look for in the next mayor they elect.

"I would add one priority: The next mayor needs to be someone who can sketch a much more vigorous role for Overland Park in regional matters that include funding mass transit, air quality, arts programs and sports stadiums."

In other words, he wants a mayor who will rubber stamp sending tax dollars from Johnson County Kansas to Jackson County Missouri. Of course no one told Yael that the voters in Johnson County defeated the Bistate II initiative he wrote so many articles about... and that is evidenced by his inclusion of the "arts programs and sports stadiums" in priorities for his mayoral pick. Bistate II was about spending Johnson County Kansas tax money to fix up the stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. It's dead Yael. Give it a rest! You want the stadiums fixed up, go see Kay Barnes and Tax Crook Shields... they should be able to skim a few more bucks without the Feds finding out.
